One of our reviewers this year is exceptional photographer, Birney Imes. Birney has been capturing a vanishing culture of his native Mississippi for almost four decades. His photography has been characterized as honest, idiosyncratic, gritty and moving. His images are on permanent display in over 20 museums and private collections in the United States and Europe. He is also the author of three books, which portray people and places of rural Mississippi: Juke Joint: Photographs, Whispering Pines and Partial to Home.

Revelry at the Ball!

Contests for Best Centerpiece and Best Cocktail!

Join us on Saturday, September 22 at the SlowExposures 10th Anniversary Ball for a night filled with fun and revelry. Located in Concord, Georgia at the R.F. Strickland Building, the Ball festivities begin with a cocktail hour at 7:00, followed by dinner and dancing.

This year’s event features two exciting contests for our partygoers, including an award for both the best table centerpiece and the best cocktail. Both will be judged on their creativity, style, and overall presentation (and taste!). Come see fabulous table displays and enjoy lots of delicious libations as you mingle throughout the Ballroom. The overall theme of this year’s Ball is “An Enchanted Southern Garden,” so let your imagination run wild and create your own stunning masterpiece.

Raffle: Ten Year Retrospective

The Raffle will be held Friday, September 21 at 5:00pm during the Reception and Opening of the Ten Year Retrospective Show. This event will be held outdoors at the Whiskey Bonding Barn (weather permitting).

 

The drawing will be held during the reception and the winning numbers posted on each print. Winners must be present to win, and will need to stop by the Raffle area to check their tickets against the winning numbers. 

 

We will have a limited number of prints available for this drawing, however you may choose which print your ticket will be drawn for.

 

There will be a much larger Raffle during the SlowExposures Ball at the R.F. Stricklands building on Sept. 22. The ball is a ticketed event and tickets may be purchased on line at  http://www.slowexposures.org/

Participants will have an opportunity to hear a discussion by two entertaining and knowledgeable photographers as they discuss their experiences in publishing photography books. The SlowExposures 10th Anniversary Ball

Celebrating Ten Years of Southern Photography

For one magical night, the R.F. Strickland Building of Concord, Georgia will be transformed into an enchanted Southern garden for the SlowExposures 10th Anniversary Ball* on Saturday, September 22, 2012.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of SlowExposures—a juried exhibition of rural Southern photography.

The Ball festivities begin with a cocktail hour at 7:00, followed by dinner and dancing, Wine will be provided with dinner, but guests are encouraged to bring their own wine, beer or cocktails for their table. Live entertainment will be provided by The Regal Brothers, featuring jazz, swing and rock music.

The Ballroom adjoins the photography gallery, allowing all guests to admire this year’s images while having an opportunity to purchase many of them at special prices available only on this particular evening. An exciting raffle event, plus table centerpiece and cocktail contests, are also part of this festive occasion.

One of our nine reviewers is Kevin Miller. He is the Director of the Southeast Museum of Photography; a public museum located at Daytona State College, in Daytona Beach, Florida.  The museum is one of the largest exclusively photographic institutions in the US. It presents 15 public exhibitions each year including single artist, thematic, vintage, retrospective, and genre themes. The museum maintains a significant permanent collection with strengths in general photographic history, documentary photography and contemporary photography.

Prior to becoming the museum director in 2001 Kevin Miller was the Department Chair of Visual Arts at Daytona State College. Previously he served on the photography faculty of Southern Illinois University. He holds graduate qualifications from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in Australia, and an MFA from Southern Illinois University, with major studies in Photographic History and Theory, Art History and Museum Studies. He waspreviously head of the photography program at Charles Sturt University in Australia. Prior to commencing his academic career, he was a freelance fine art and commercial photographer.

2012 Mock-Up

Paul Conlan reports that the print files for all 90 of this years show photographs have been received from participating photographers.  They will be used for the 2012 SlowExposures show book which is now under development.  The book will be available for sale at the show.  Thanks to all 58 photographers who have allowed their photos to be included in this year's book.

Show books for 2008 - 2011 are available to purchase/view at Blurb.com.  You can pull up each book and view all of the photos in the show for each of those years.  Book purchases help fund this year's show and the work of Pike Historic Preservation.

SlowBook Afternoon adds Jerry Siegel

SlowBook Afternoon is thrilled to announce the addition of Georgia/Alabama photographer Jerry Siegel to our program on Sunday, September 23, immediately following the Jurors’ talk.   Jerry is the author of Facing South: Portraits of Southern Artists and an upcoming photography book on the Black Belt region of Alabama.  For his book Facing South, he photographed such artists as Lamar Dodd, William Eggleston, Thornton Dial, and Don Cooper.  He will share some of his experiences photographing the artists and working with the publisher and others in an attempt to bring about his successful photography book.  All photographers, those photographers interested in publishing their own books, as well as members of the community with an interest in the arts, will find SlowBook Afternoon an interesting and enjoyable way to spend a Sunday afternoon in September.  Tickets for SlowBook Afternoon are $15 and may be purchased via our website http://www.slowexposures.org.

Participant feedback:

I participated in the 2011 Portfolio Review at SlowExposures and found the experience extremely helpful. I brought with me to the review a completed project that I had shown in a gallery a few months before. Although I had been pleased with the coupling of my diptychs, the jurors provided me with insightful recommendations and suggested I change the diptych format to single prints. As a result of the comments I received, I reprinted the project and it was indeed a stronger body of work as a result of the changes. The icing on the cake was that Kevin Miller, one of the reviewers, invited me to show my project at the Southeast Museum of Photography's Lyonia Gallery in Deltona, Florida.

Photographic Workshop in the Mississippi Delta

Magdalena Sole, juried into SlowE last year, is offering an incredible 7-day photography workshop that is

...about using the camera in a spontaneous way and learning how to get close to your subjects. It is a workshop that will emphasize the development of a unique, personal way of seeing and the development of an intuitive way of editing your photographs.  We will also discuss with participants over the week how to take their work to the next level. It’s a workshop open to amateurs and professionals alike.

This workshop will take place at the Seven Chimneys Farm near Clarksdale, MS, from October 17 - 24, 2012.  The workshop fee is $1,800 ($1,500 if you sign up by August 15), and does not include travel, accommodation, or meal expenses.  Please note that there are 2 tuition-scholarships available for people who currently reside in the Mississippi Delta. In 2008, Mr. Bazan’s recently launched publishing house, BazanPhotos Publishing, released his book Bazan Cuba covering his fourteen years of life and photography on the island.

Tenth Anniversary Annual Juried Exhibition Celebrating Photography of the Rural South.

All are invited to submit photographs for the Tenth Anniversary SlowExposures Photography Exhibition in Pike County, Georgia (one hour South of Atlanta’s Hartsfield Jackson airport). Successful images should capture those qualities that call to mind the rural American South with its unique sense of place, diversity, contradictions and complexity.

The 2012 jurors are Brett Abbott, Photography Curator of the High Museum of Art in Atlanta and Julian Cox, Founding Curator of Photography of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. They will select up to 90 images in a blind jury process. You may enter up to six (6) images online. All work must be original to the artist and have been photographed within the past four (4) years. An entry fee of $50 must accompany online entry and may be paid through credit card or PayPal. The entry deadline is midnight June 15th and the show will be open from September 21 – 30. A space for 25 photographers in our 3rd Portfolio Review is open on a first come first serve basis.  Each photographer will have an unparalleled opportunity to have his/her work seen by four of the panel’s reviewers in 25 minute sessions.  The price is $300 and also includes lunch with the reviewers and other participants, Reception and Opening of Ten Year Retrospective Show at Whiskey Bonding Barn, 9263 Old Zebulon Road, Molena, GA (Sept. 21st, 5 pm), and Soiree at the Split Oak Farm, Zebulon , GA (Sept. 21st, 7 pm).

Portfolio Walk

All photographers participating in the Portfolio Review will have the opportunity to show their Portfolios to the public at the SlowExposures Ball on Saturday, September 22nd, at 7pm.  Each photographer will have 30 inches table space to display his/hers images.  Sale of the images will be allowed if the prices are given to the SlowExposures Sale Coordinator prior to the Ball.  SlowExposures deducts 30% commission on all sales.  Those photographers who wish to eat dinner and be seated at the Ball table will be expected to purchase a $65 Ball ticket.

Anne Berry, from Newnan, GA, who has been juried into Slow E in the past, has received an honorable mention for her photograph, Monkey in Greenhouse, in the Santa Fe Photographic Workshops' Portrait photography contest!

From the website:

The portrait. Environmental, studio, candid, or posed. Self or pet, color, black-and-white, alternative process or iPhone. No matter what the genre, there’s a power in a well-captured portrait, a sense of breath and life. A portrait can comfort us, unnerve us, cause us to smile, or move us to tears. Whatever the emotional response, portraits possess the capacity to connect us all through shared encounters.  PORTRAITS inspired 960 photographers (from 32 countries) to submit 3743 images that embraced portraiture. Jurors Aline Smithson, Amber Terranova, Andrew Smith, and Reid Callanan reviewed this body of inspiring interpretations and chose 50 award-winning photographs.

Anderson (Andy) Scott is Whistling Dixie

Anderson Scott, advisory board member for Slow, has recently published a new book, Whistling Dixie, a photographic documentary of "latter-day Confederates at a series of reenactments" throughout the Southeast.  From the publisher:

Scott captures these latter-day Confederates at a series of reenactments in the years leading up to the 2011 sesquicentennial of the Civil War. Always maintaining the perspective of a keen and sometimes ambivalent observer, Scott’s photographs convey the earnestness and enthusiasm of this subculture while exposing its idiosyncrasies and contradictions.

"Thank God", 2004 3rd Place Winner

Scott’s photographs span the southern countryside, documenting reenactments in Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Florida, and the Carolinas as well as living histories and Confederate Memorial Days. An essay by Scott, describing his experience at a reenactment of the Battle of Selma, and a cultural essay by J. Mills Thornton, professor emeritus University of Michigan, provide context for the photographs and the subculture of their subjects.

Andy has been juried into Slow Exposures several times, winning first, second, and third prizes in 2005, 2007, and 2004, respectively. 



Tim Barnwell, Photographer (& Slow E. Panelist!)

Tim Barnwell, of Barnwell Photography, will be joining Slow Exposures this year as a panelist for the Salon this fall.  From his website:

Tim Barnwell is a commercial and fine art photographer based in Asheville, North Carolina. His career has spanned over 25 years as both a professional photographer and a photography instructor, including eight years as executive director of the nationally recognized school, Appalachian Photographic Workshops (1980-1988).

His travelling photography exhibit, Hands in Harmony, a 30 image exploration of folk music and traditional handcrafts, is currently hanging at the Ferst Center for the Arts at Georgia Tech in Atlanta.  He is also offering two popular photography workshops in May, Basic Photo Image Management (May 15, 2 - 5:30PM) and Introduction to your Digital Camera (May 17, 2 - 5:30PM).

Please accept my apologies for the sporadic postings lately, but the pecans have bloomed and they brought pollen (and allergies) galore!

That said, please take some time to read this interesting interview of Magdalena Solé by Elizabeth Avedon, on her new exhibit, After the Water Receded: Images from Japan.  Magdalena had several images juried into Slow Exposures in 2011 and will be returning this year to do a book signing.

Elizabeth Avedon came to Slow in 2011 to lecture on creating a photo book and will be returning this year to participate in the portfolio reviews!

From the stark commentary of photojournalism to unforgettable portraits of leaders and the lavish fantasy worlds created through fashion spreads, representatives from some of China’s strongest publications joins The New Yorker’s former visuals director Elisabeth Biondi to focus on the role of magazines as platforms for photographic work, whether to augment the reader’s experience or present pictorial statements compelling in their own right.

This program is in conjunction with Beyond Words: Photography in The New Yorker, on exhibition in UCCA’s central gallery 15 April – 10 June and is part of the 2012 Caochangdi Photospring Festival program.

Peter van Agtmael, Lunch & Learn

On Sunday, September 23rd, 2012, Peter van Agtmael will be giving a Lunch and Learn to discuss his experiences while embedded with American troops in Iraq and Afganistan.

Van Agtmael graduated from Yale in 2003 and was awarded a grant to spend a year in China documenting the social and economic impact of the Three Gorges Dam. Following that, he travelled extensively in Africa photographing the AIDS epidemic through the experiences of one HIV-positive refugee.

In 2006, at just 24 years old, he began a series of embeds in Iraq and Afganistan and would spend the next two years capturing the war(s). Not content to leave it overseas, however, van Agtmael then followed the troops home, some in caskets, to continue their stories and the war at home. His book, 2nd Tour Hope I Don’t Die, relates the time he spent and the people he encountered on this assignment. The Life & Death of Matthew Ferrara is a brilliant example of this persistence.
