Mini-Port Reviews!

Slowexposures is going to offer MINI–PORTFOLIO REVIEWS on Saturday, September 13^th from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm.  Each reviewer will have four slots open on the first come first serve basis.  Each slot will be 25 minutes long, just as it is in the full review, but you will pay for one review and have a choice to bring anywhere from a few work samples, up to 20. (Time Slots will be assigned as available.) The cost is $65 per slot.  The photographers will have a choice of the reviewer(s).  The deadline for registering is midnight Friday the 13^th. 

If you are interested go to the Slowexposures.org/Mini-Port Reviews, choose the reviewer, and follow up with the payment.

The 2013 Student Show is still open for entries. So kids, hit us with your best photo of "The Natural World".
What does that mean?
You tell us!

One thing to remember, though when you're getting your submission ready: the photos need to be sized to 5" x 7" at 300 dpi. This might be larger than what your phone/camera is set to shoot at normally, so check your settings.

Submission deadline is quickly approaching- August 25. So get your submissions in soon!

SlowExposures is pleased to present Photography 101 for the amateur photographer who, having been inspired by the awesome photography on exhibit at the show and satellite shows, wants to enter SlowExposures 2014 or just wants to improve on family and vacation photographs.

Popular Showcase School instructor, Sara Keith, will walk you through fun exercises on topics such as:

• the basics: memory cards, batteries, and card readers
• how to hold your camera
• focusing
• shooting modes and menu options
• intro to advanced functions: white balance, aperture, shutter, and exposure
• how to take better portraits and landscape shots (all the rules!)
• hands-on practice in and around Stricklands using your new skills!

Sara will lead you through topics including:

• meterng modes and getting a perfect exposure

Sara received her first digital camera from her grandfather when she was twelve years old. What started as an after-school hobby became her life. She recently received her BFA in Photography from the Savannah College of Art and Design with a minor in Film and Television. Her personal work ranges from video installations to pet photography. She is an animal lover, food lover, and traveler. 

In addition to teaching and assignment work, Sara works with Jackson Fine Art and the Woodruff Arts Center.

 

Portfolio Review

Only 13 spaces left!

The Portfolio Review will be held on September 21st, from 9 am until 3 pm, at the Stricklands Store, in Concord, Georgia. The fee is only $299, which includes a 20-minute review by five outstanding reviewers, lunch, and Soiree on Friday night (Sept. 20th).

Participating in a Portfolio Review can be an eye opening experience.  When fresh eyes look at your work, threads that tie the work together, that you may not have seen, can become apparent.  It is a great experience to meet with a reviewer in a one on one conversation over your body of work.  During the down time and after the review it is a great time to network and meet other photographers.

As a participant in SlowExposures, you will have an opportunity to get feedback on your work by taking part in the Portfolio Review. Emerging photographers will be able to spend time with seasoned reviewers to gain insight and guidance. Think of this as a master class in photography, focused entirely on your work! Alexa Dilworth

 

Alexa Dilworth is the publishing director and senior editor at the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University, where she also runs the Awards Program, which includes the CDS/Honickman First Book Prize in Photography, the CDS Documentary Essay Prize for Writing and Photography, and the Lange-Taylor Prize.

 

In 1995, Dilworth was hired by CDS to work for DoubleTake magazine, where she held the position of proofreader, managing editor, and then executive director. She was also hired as editor of the CDS books program at that time and has coordinated the editorial, design, and production work for every CDS book since 1996 -- most recently (since 2010), One Place: Paul Kwilecki and Four decades of Photographs from Decatur County, Georgia, In The Timeless Time: Living and Dying on Death Row in America, Literacy & Justice Through Photography, Iraq / Perspectives: Photographs by Benjamin Lowry, American Studies: Photographs by Jim Dow, Visual Storytelling: The Digital Video Documentary, and Reality Radio: Telling True Stories in Sounds, which she co-edited.

 

CDS Books at the Center for Documentary Studies are works of creative exploration by writers and photographers who convey new ways of seeing and understanding human experience in all its diversity -- books that tell stories, challenge our assumptions, awaken our social conscience, and connect life, learning, and art.

 

Alexa Dilworth has a B.A. and M.A., both in English, from the University of Florida and an M.F.A. in creative writing (poetry) from the Iowa Writers' Workshop at the University of Iowa. She was born in Japan; raised in Springfield, Virginia and Jacksonville, Florida; and has now lived in Durham, North Carolina for twenty-two years.

 

Dilworth is new to SlowExposures this year and a portfolio reviewer. She is interested in seeing new and innovative approaches to documentary projects.

Dennis Kiel

 



Dennis Kiel is on the panel of reviewers for SlowExposures Portfolio Review 2013. Sign up today to secure your spot.

 

Kiel has been Chief Curator at Light Factory Contemporary Museum of Photography and Film since 2007. As of January 2013, he is also serving as Interim Executive Director. Before joining TLF, Kiel served as the Associate Curator of Prints, Drawings, and Photographs at the Cincinnati Art Museum for 24 years. During that time, he curated numerous exhibitions, including The Hollywood Photographs of George Hurrell (later a traveling show for SITES); The Human Experience: Photographs by Nicholas Nixon; and Borrowed Time: The Photograph as Music Album Cover.

 

For five years he taught a class in the history of photography at Northern Kentucky University. At The Light Factory, the exhibitions Kiel has curated include Group f.64: Photographs by Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, Imogen Cunningham, Willard Van Dyke, and Brett Weston; The Romance of the Road; Suspicious Minds: Surrealism in the 21st Century; Bring the Family; Body & Soul; The Calm Before The Storm; Out in the Streets: Democratic National Convention, Chicago 1968; Connected There but Not Always Here: Social Networking and the Power of Image.

 

Kiel served as a member of the National Endowment for the Arts panel titled "American Masterpieces: Visual Arts Touring" (2009) and has participated in portfolio reviews at Houston Fotofest (2008, 2010, 2012), "Our World" for Photo Alliance, San Francisco (2009-2013), Photolucida, Portland Oregon (2011), and Review Santa Fe (2012). He was also a juror for Photolucida's Critical Mass in 2011 and 2012.

 

This Saturday, June 1, at The Light Factory there is an opening reception for the sixth juried Annuale.

Deadline Approaching

The deadline for entries for the 11th Annual SlowExposures is June 16th!          We have heard from many of you already, but for those of you who love the extra-adrenaline push of that last 24 hours, don't forget that June 16th approaches sooner than you think! The 11th Annual is shaping up to be a great event and we are anticipating a great crowd of collectors, photography fans, and photographers to converge in Pike County during Opening Weekend (September 20-22). Come and join us--we guarantee a rewarding experience! If you enter, you are among the honored photographers--you're invited to the Friday evening Soiree at Split Oak Farm along with all the receptions and Juror's Talk during the weekend.       We are introducing our new Opening Saturday event: Dinner on the Grounds at the Whiskey Bonding Barn. We're going a bit more casual this year for our big shindig--leave the formal wear behind and join us at the Barn for great southern food, music, incredible scenery, and a do-able ticket price. Conversation, networking, and spontaneous inspiration will prevail!        SlowExposures is held every year during the last two weekends in September. Rob McDonald

Rob McDonald is one of the jurors for SlowExposures this year. He will also be exhibiting his work at A Novel Experience in Zebulon during September.

For twenty years, Rob McDonald has taught literature and writing at Virginia Military Institute, where he is currently Associate Dean of the Faculty and a professor of English and Fine Arts. In 1999, he began experimenting with photography as a creative extension of his academic interests in the literature and culture of the South, and since then his work has been featured in numerous exhibitions and in four books: BIRDHOUSES (Horse & Buggy, 2007), BIRTH PLACE (Nazraeli, 2008), POPLAR FOREST (Horse & Buggy, 2010), and—with Even Rogers and Sally Mann—CY’S ROLLEI (Nazraeli, 2011).
     Rob’s new series NATIVE GROUND explores the role of place in shaping literary imagination. Examining the notion that writers compose out of a peculiar understanding and depth of connection to physical space, the series focuses on the homes and personal landscapes of more than twenty writers from the American South. 
     The recipient of a 2013 fellowship from the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, Rob’s work is in the collection of numerous private and public collections, including the Museum of Fine Arts Houston and the Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth. He is a native of rural Marion County, South Carolina, which he still considers home.

Portfolio Review -- Brie Castell

SlowExposures is once again offering portfolio reviews on Saturday, September 21.  Portfolio review during SlowExposures is a relaxed and casual, yet a very informative and unique experience. One of the reviewers is Brie Castell; owner and chief curator of Castell Photography Gallery in Asheville, North Carolina.

 

Ms. Castell works with both established and emerging artists from around the globe for exhibition and representation, and brings to Asheville leading authorities in the field of photography for educational programming. Ms. Castell has also been a working photo-based artist for over 13 years, has exhibited extensively around the country, and is in numerous public and private collections. She was a featured artist in the Fall 2009 issue of Eyemazing Magazine, an award winning Amsterdam-based photography publication. Ms. Castell received her MFA from East Carolina University, and currently is also Adjunct Professor of Photography at Virginia Intermont College.

 

Ms. Castell is interested in viewing cohesive bodies of works from both emerging and established artists which would be suitable for gallery setting, and potentially at Castell Photography Gallery. Primarily, Ms. Castell is interested in fine art conceptual photography (non=commercial and non-documentary) -- works, which are predominantly narrative, challenging, dynamic, and fresh. In addition to being a curator, Ms. Castell is also an artist and educator, and would be interested in reviewing bodies of work in progress, and discussing further development and realization of these images.

 

Kevin Miller

Kevin Miller, Curator and Director of the Southeast Museum of Photography is one of the pair of jurors for SlowExposures for 2013. Since 2001 he has curated and presented more than 200 exhibitions at this public museum on the campus of Daytona State College. Miller has been a part of SlowExposures for the past couple of years serving as portfolio reviewer.

 

Opening at the museum April 30 is an exhibit highlighting photography by recent graduates of Daytona State's photography program.
